What is special about a deadlift bar? What is the difference between a deadlift bar and a regular powerlifting bar?
A deadlift bar is thinner and longer, compared to a normal competition powerlifting bar. The shaft is 27mm, compared to 29mm, and it is 230cm long, compared to 220cm. The IPF (International Powerlifting Federation) uses the same bar for all three lifts. This bar is the IPF approved Ram Bar 2.0. In contrast, the WPC (World Powerlifting Congress) uses a standard competition powerlifting bar for the bench press. They use different specialty bars for the squat and deadlift. These include the Texas and ATX bars for squats and deadlifts, respectively. A bench press and squat bar are usually very stiff. In contrast, a deadlift bar is made to be flexible. It has what is called “whip.”
What is the standard bar for deadlifts?
Again, this depends on the powerlifting organisation. The IPF will use the same bar for all three lifts – check out our IPF Approved bars. Whereas other organisations, including the BPU and WPC, will use a speciality deadlift bar.
Is it worth getting a deadlift bar?
If you compete with a group that uses a deadlift bar, it’s good to get to know one.
